Description:
Smallest phalarope, with needle-like bill and slender neck; shorter wings and tail. Adult breeding has white throat and red stripe down side of grey neck. Adult non-breeding has prominent black mask and cap, with dark line running down hind neck; has dark grey upperparts.
Distribution:
Uncommon passage migrant through major waterways and lakes in Gilgit-Baltistan. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. From lowlands up to 4000m during passage migration.
Behavior:
Forages by swimming, wading and walking; pecks at prey at water surface, from vegetation or mud, lunges, upends, seizes flying insects, and often spins around in shallow water. Diet chiefly insects, especially dipteran flies and their larvae, as well as beetles, caddisflies, ants and bugs; also other small invertebrates, including snails, crustaceans and annelid worms; some seeds.
